BSB: Ducks Fall Just Short Of UCLA Sweep in Extra Inning Loss

Oregon baseball loses game three of their three game Pac-12 series against the UCLA Bruins in extra innings.

Ducks score 1 run in each of the first two innings and took their 2-1 lead into the sixth. The Bruins took the lead back in the top half when JT Schwartz went deep for his first of two 2-run homers on the day. In the bottom half Oregon regained the lead with RBIs from Smith and Grant who helped put a 3 spot in the bottom of the sixth to lead 5-3. UCLA had a run in the seventh and eighth to tie the game and send it to extras.

The tenth inning proved to be the most exciting and the difference. In the top half, JT Schwartz went yard again, this time off Oregon’s flame thrower Hunter Breault. They took a 7-6 lead into the bottom half.

Gabe Matthews started the rally with a gap two-bagger. A coughed-up ball to the shortstop, which would have ended the game allowed the pinch-hitting Bellafronto to reach base safely and put runners on the corners. Tristan Hanoian then pitch hit for the red hot Gavin Grant and he laid down a bunt that touched the fingertips of the catcher and played Matthews to cut the deficit to one. With two outs and the winning runs on the base path, Rajcic forced a game ending groundout and prevent the sweep.
